LIMBANG: The Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) is actively instilling a sense of responsibility among the local community to be more sensitive to the environment.
Sarawak Environmental Quality Controller Jack Liam, counseled Limbang residents to unite in the efforts to preserve and conserve the environment.
“Residents especially in the Batu Danau area, Limbang division are urged to ensure that the air quality is always in good condition by avoiding open burning.
“This is because it can cause hazy conditions, especially during prolonged dry seasons or droughts,” he said.
The text of his speech was read by Deputy Controller of Environmental Quality, Paul Chamberlin at the ‘Environmental Awareness Programme: River Cleanliness and Open Burning Prohibition with the Community’ which was officiated by Batu Danau assemblyman, Datuk Paulus Gumbang at Dewan Kampung Pangkalan Madang recently.
The objective of the programme was to raise awareness about issues related to river pollution, open burning and the implications of pollution on universal health.
“If burning is necessary for agricultural activities, farmers need to be more careful so that it does not spread out of control and cause a haze disaster,” he added.
