KUCHING: Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) ‘No Plastic Straw’ campaign is an excellent example of how government and green enterprises can contribute to biodiversity sustainability, said founder cum president of Kuching Beach Cleaners Association Alcila Abby.
She stated that the programme served as an example for other businesses to follow.
She was commenting on the council’s successful effort to stop the use of one million plastic straws in two years’ time.
Alcila called for more programmes for people to understand the negative impacts of not just plastic straws but single-use plastics generally.
“Plastics obstruct sunlight from reaching marine plants and algae that depend on the sun to create nutrients.
“The disturbance of the entire marine food web eventually affects our sources of food and income.
“Plastics will also be mistaken as food by marine animals and they’ll get ingestion and have false satiation. Eventually, they will starve to death,” she explained.
