KUCHING: Sarawak is not facing any issue concerning lack of food supply at the moment, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said this included the supply of chickens and chicken eggs.
“For egg supply, there is no problem with it. I was made to understand from the Ministry of Agriculture that we have enough supply of chickens.
“However, some imported items may be affected,” he told reporters when met after officiating at an International Symposium On Digital Industry Transformation 2022 at CENTEXS Kuching, Jalan Sultan Tengah yesterday (June 7).
He was prompted for comments on measures being taken by the state government in view of the reported lack of food supply such as eggs and flour.
He pointed out that Sarawak has emphasised on modern agriculture to ensure its food security.
“We want our farmers to use modern technology in their farming, only then people will take up farming.
“At the same time, this will contribute to food security and enable Sarawak to achieve its vision of becoming a net food exporter by 2030,” he said.
On another note, he said that the state would develop the Lubok Punggor area in Gedong as one of the modern agricultural areas.
“Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) has been tasked to set up a lab for that purpose.
“This laboratory will be used to introduce new technologies in modern agriculture in the area later on,” he said.
He added that among the modern agriculture that would be developed in Gedong was paddy cultivation.
