KUCHING: Minister of Utilities Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom has assured the release of excessive water from the Bakun dam will not cause any floods in areas downstream.

He explained the release of water would pose no repercussions as it was part of the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the dam.

“The release of the water depends on the level of requirement to generate power.

“So when the rainfall is heavy such as nowadays, the engineers in the dam’s operation team know how much water to release,” he told reporters after attending a PBB Supreme Council meeting at the PBB Headquarters here yesterday.

Dr Rundi was clarifying recent public misconceptions that the release of water from the dam would cause floods in areas downstream.

“Once a certain level of power has been achieved, release of water is needed,” said Dr Rundi.

He added the release of water would not compromise the principal structure of the dam in any way.
