SIBU: Marine repair and overhaul is exempted from Sales & Service Tax (SST).

In making the announcement, Sarawak Association of Maritime Industries (Samin) president Dr Renco Yong said the exemption was due to the contributions of AMIM (Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia), Samin and many other association to the maritime industry.

“In addition to our global endeavours, we have also been steadfast in our efforts to foster dialogue and collaboration with various government departments, agencies, and stakeholders,” he said at the Samin fifth anniversary dinner held here on Friday (May 3).

. “Through forums, seminars, and meetings, we have addressed industry challenges, advocated for policy reforms, and forged partnerships that have propelled our industry forward.

“Our commitment to open dialogue and constructive engagement has been the cornerstone of our success.”

The auspicious occasion graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, also witnessed the the launch of Samin’s second book edition on Sarawak Maritime Industry as well as its theme song publication ceremony.

Yong said the past six years have been a testament to the power of collaboration, dedication, and collective vision to have transformed Samin into a dynamic and influential force within the maritime community.

“One of the hallmarks of our journey has been our unwavering commitment to showcasing Sarawak’s maritime excellence on the global stage.

“Through our participation in maritime exhibitions in Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Jakarta, and in Kuching, we have not only promoted our members’ shipbuilding products and ship repair services but have also elevated Sarawak’s profile as a leading player in the international maritime arena.”

But he said it is also important to acknowledge the unfinished work that lies ahead.

“There are several projects and initiatives that require the continued dedication and commitment of the new committees, advisers and council members,” he said.

These, he pointed out,  include the development of a new industry area spanning 150 acres in Sibu Panasu by MINTRED, the establishment of the Sarawak Maritime Training Centre, and the realisation of the Kuala Paloh Maritime Industry Zone, among others.

Among those present were Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Alice Lau , Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang , Polical Secretary to the Premier Joshua Ting , Chairman of Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong, Samin honorary life president Ngieng Ping Sing, and organising chairman Ling Tiu Khing.
