KUCHING: Shifting the proceedings of the Dewan Rakyat or State Legislative Assembly (DUN) to virtual sessions will lose their essence of purpose, opined Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.
He was commenting on several proposals for Parliament to be conducted virtually in view of the current spike in Covid-19 cases in the country.
“No, I don’t agree. You will lose the essence of the purpose of the Dewan,” Dennis told New Sarawak Tribune today.
At present, the proceeding of the Dewan Rakyat is being conducted according to the Standing Orders, which requires Members of Parliament to be present during the sittings unless given permission to be absent by the Speaker.
There was no provision in the Standing Orders that allows the Dewan Rakyat session to be convened online.
