MELAKA: The Melaka government has decided not to allow Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik to give talks in any programme in the state but welcomes him as a tourist.
Chief Minister Adly Zahari said this is to maintain racial unity and harmony in the state.
“We will not allow any programme of Zakir in Melaka. Nevertheless, he is welcome to come as a tourist to Melaka to learn how people live in harmony.
“Come to Melaka to see how the people of various races in the state have been living in peace and harmony and take Melaka as a model of unity,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Zakir was required to be at Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to resume giving a statement to the police over allegedly controversial remarks he had made against Malaysian Hindus and Malaysian Chinese in Kelantan on Aug 3. The police called him up first last Friday.
The preacher from India, who is a permanent resident in Malaysia, is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
Zakir has been wanted by Indian authorities since 2016 for alleged money laundering and inciting extremism through hate speeches. – Bernama
