Nokia is hoping to set a new standard in smartphone camera quality with a new flagship phone that boasts five rear camera lenses, all taking pictures at the same time.
The Nokia 9 PureView pieces together five images to create one photo with higher resolution. The resulting image should contain far more details and also let you change the focus after taking the photo.
Nearly all smartphone brands have added a multi-lens camera to the backs of their flagship models, but even Samsung has drawn the line at a maximum of four on its latest model.
HMD Global, which produces mobile phones under the Nokia brand name, is using the multi-lens expertise of US start-up Light, best known for their 16-camera L16 smartphone.
The PureView also can create photos in the RAW format used by professional photographers, allowing further editing.
Light, which has developed a special chip for the purpose of stitching together photos, worked together with Nokia to integrate its technology, HMD head Florian Seiche said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The flagship model will go on sale at a starting price of US$699.
Besides the PureView, HMD continues to focus on phones at lower prices, also releasing the Nokia 1 Plus for 99 dollars, as well as the 3.2 and 4.2 at prices between US$139 and US$199, at the Barcelona fair.
The company also showed off the US$35 Nokia 210, which gets an entire day’s worth of calls out of one single charge.
HMD also plans to ride on the strength of the Nokia brand when it comes to the mobile phone market and sees itself as the market leader when it comes to budget phones. HMD’s Seiche says the company manages to sell some 400 million budget phones every year. – dpa
