KUCHING: In Malaysia, non-Muslims are restricted to a monogamous marriage under civil customary law.
Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said this clarification comes amid discussions triggered by viral images showing a Chinese man at a wedding ceremony here raising questions about the legality of polygamy for non-Muslims in the country.
“The general requirements for valid marriages, particularly for non-Muslims, are clearly outlined by the Malaysian National Registration Department (JPN).
“This matter falls outside my jurisdiction. Nonetheless, in Sarawak, marriages are categorised into civil, customary, and those under Islamic law, each governed by its respective regulations and laws,” Fatimah told a press conference for the upcoming Para SUKMA 2024 at her residence today (March 12).
However, she refrained from elaborating further, pointing out that the JPN is better positioned to address queries about this issue.
“I believe the JPN will provide more detailed explanations regarding this circulating issue,” she added.
