KUCHING: Sarawak’s hopes for a medal on the final day of the road race cycling event were dashed again as the state’s cyclists failed to podium in the criterium.
Terengganu’s Mohamad Afi Danial Ramli dominated the men’s category, clinching gold with 19 points.
Teammate Muhammad Iqbal Daniel Mohd Nawawi took silver with 16 points, while Melaka’s Muhammad Hafiq Mohd Jafri earned bronze with 13.
A total of 76 cyclists competed in the criterium, covering 43.2km (1.8km x 24 laps) with eight sprints.
However, 17 riders failed to finish the race held along the Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Highway.
In the women’s event, Kedah’s Nur Fitrah Shaari won gold with 20 points. Yeong Zhen Yi from the Federal Territory claimed silver with 13 points, and Terengganu’s Ameera Alya Md Zahirrudin secured bronze with 12.
Of the 40 women who started, 12 did not complete the 32.4km race (1.8km x 18 laps, six sprints).
