SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, has urged athletes, coaches, and spectators to acquire basic first aid knowledge to respond effectively to sports injuries.

Chieng, speaking at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch’s World First Aid Day 2024 celebration on Saturday (Oct 12), said that first aid skills could save lives and prevent further harm in critical moments before professional medical help arrives.

“This year’s theme, ‘First Aid and Sports,’ is particularly relevant in today’s active society,” he said.

“While sports promote teamwork, discipline, and healthy lifestyles, they also carry inherent risks of injury.”
“By equipping ourselves with these skills, we ensure not only that our sports events are safe but also that we can provide immediate care when needed,” he said.

The MRCS Sibu branch has been at the forefront of providing first aid training and education, inspiring a culture of care and readiness in the community.
