KUCHING: The Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) has announced the launching of the second phase of Environmental Impact Assessment Consultants Management System (EIACMS).
During the officiation ceremony of the Environmental Management for Sustainability seminar at Imperial hotel here, Thursday (Oct 31), NREB Controller Datuk Jack Liam said this innovative digital platform, developed by NREB, is designed to enhance the efficiency of managing environmental consultants while minimising the environmental footprint associated with administrative processes.
Additionally, he stated that the seminar has a total of five papers, with the topics that are not only timely, but essential as they work together towards a more sustainable Sarawak.
“Paper one shared success stories from the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) in Johor, illustrating how urban regions can lead the way in reducing carbon footprints while enhancing residents’ quality of life.
“Paper two explored Malaysia’s climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, providing valuable insights into national efforts to combat climate change.
“Paper three outlined Sarawak’s ambitious Net Zero 2050 targets, emphasizing the key provisions of the newly enacted Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023,” he said.
Regarding the seminar, he said the theme “Mitigating Climate Change for a Clean and Green Sarawak,” reflects not just a global imperative but also everybody’s duty here in Sarawak to protect the environment while fostering sustainable growth.
“As Sarawak’s natural resources drive our economy, we are at a pivotal moment where we must balance development with environmental stewardship to ensure long-term prosperity and wellbeing for future generations.
“As part of Sarawak’s commitment to mitigating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the NREB has taken a significant step forward with the enforcement of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Ordinance 2023, which came into effect on March 1.
“This ordinance aims to regulate and monitor carbon emissions across key sectors, such as oil and gas and energy, to ensure all activities align with the state’s broader environmental sustainability objectives,” he added.
The launching of the EIACMS was done by Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
