KOTA SAMARAHAN: New Sarawak Tribune online editor Nazmi Suhaimi has shared his experience and insights on how the newspaper functions as a medium for inclusivity.

“I joined New Sarawak Tribune about three years ago, and I find that we are inclusive in the sense that we report, publish and circulate news that is most likely left out by other dailies.

“It is about the human interest aspect such as the local socio-economy through the development of small business and community programmes,” he said.

He was a panelist at a a forum titled “Newspaper as a Medium Inclusivity – Stories from Sarawak Tribune”, which was attended by students from various universities, including Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

The forum, which was held in conjunction with the fourth International Conference on Media and Society (iC-MAS2022), focused on how the media could become inclusive and give ample space, specifically for the marginalised group or community.

“To be inclusive on certain issues, everyone’s views matter regardless of how good or bad the views are,” he said during the forum at DeTAR Putra UNIMAS here today (Dec 21).

Nazmi then revealed his biggest lesson while working in the industry is that clarity is important.

“In today’s world, we cannot afford to imply when we are sending a message, instead we must state (specifically).

“It must be concise and straight to the point, and this means being articulate in delivering your points. If you do not do that, misinterpretations and misreporting could happen and it is dangerous,” he added.

The forum lasted for one hour from 10.40 am until 11.40 am. Also present during the forum was UNIMAS’s director of publishing cum senior lecturer of the Faculty of Language and Communication Malia Taibi who was the moderator for the forum.
