KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has decided that the number of flights and passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Sarawak be reduced to help curb Covid-19 pandemic at the state.
This is to ascertain that there are enough rooms at designated quarantine centres such as hotel rooms to cater for incoming passengers at any time.
In a press statement issued yesterday, state Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said he had personally contacted federal Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“I told him about the decision to limit the frequency of flights from Kuala Lumpur to the state.
“The matter was deliberated in a meeting with the federal ministerial committee of the movement control order (MCO) last April 30. They agreed to our request and the decision took effect last May 2,” he said.
Thus, starting May 16 there will be four Kuala Lumpur-Kuching flights per week; Kuala Lumpur-Miri — twice weekly; Kuala Lumpur-Sibu and Kuala Lumpur-Bintulu (once each weekly).
Lee said the decision of the federal ministerial committee meeting was conveyed by Wee to the acting chief executive officer of Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) and chief executive officer of Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) last April 30 for follow-up actions with airline companies.
“On behalf of SMDC, I express my appreciation and gratitude to Wee and his ministry, and the ministerial committee for their support,” he said.
In addition, Lee also expressed his gratitude to airline companies for their understanding and cooperation.
