MIRI: Mohamad Nurhasri Maxzakir is continuing his father’s legacy with a golden triumph in the men’s Class E silat category narrowly defeating Pahang’s Muhammad Raden Sabry Mohd Insan with a score of 60-58.

In a gripping contest, Nurhasri displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming a late comeback to secure his victory.

He was six points behind his Pahang opponent. In the first round, Nurhasri took the lead with 21 points.

However, he fell behind by six points in the second round. Despite this, he still managed to score 28 points in the final round to win 60-58 in the dying seconds.

“My father always reminds and pointed out the importance of mental strength, and that guidance was crucial for me,” he said, reflecting on his performance

At 20 years old, Nurhasri who hails from Kuching has been dedicated to silat since he was 10.

He plans to use his winnings to support his family and aspires to represent the country one day, following in his brother’s footsteps and stepping into his father’s legacy.

“I’m motivated by my family’s achievements in silat. My brother is a national silat fighter, and I aspire to follow in his footsteps,” he told reporters at the Miri Indoor Stadium last night (Aug 23).

Indeed, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Nurhasri’s father, Maxzakir, is celebrated as the 1994 World Silat Champion from Hat Yai, Thailand.

“As a father, I am immensely proud of Nurhasri’s achievement. Both of my sons are passionate about silat. Nurhasri’s brother, Mohd Abdul Latip, previously won gold at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).

“Nurhasri’s goal was to emulate his brother’s success and secure gold in SUKMA. I am proud of both my sons; their dedication and sacrifices have truly paid off,” Maxzakir said.
