KUCHING: Nurses have been encouraged to uphold the selfless attitude of Florence Nightingale when carrying out their duties.

Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) director Dr Ngian Hie Ung said that despite Nightingale coming from a wealthy family, she had dedicated her life to the nursing profession.

“Being a nurse, at times you can get tired especially in this Covid-19 pandemic, but we must always be reminded of that passion in your work.

“The passion within will give you strength physically and mentally. The more passionate you become, no matter how tired you are, you are still able to hold on because of your passion,” she said at the state-level World Nurses Day celebration at SGH here on Friday (May 13).

She added that one’s passion could change over time, but nurses should rekindle their passion.

“Sit down and ask yourself how much you have done and how much you have affected positively from your job and this will lead to more passion in the job.”

Dr Ngian said nurses should also volunteer themselves to do more and be willing to allow challenges to become a motivation.

“For those leading the other nurses, you must also learn to have a learning attitude and be a good mentor to others.”
