KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Regional Nursing Students’ Conference 2017 at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here yesterday attracted about 150 people comprising students and lecturers of the varsity and other learning institutions.

In his speech to officiate at the conference Minister of Local Government Datuk Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian made a firm reminder to the students in attendance.

“If students are not able to cope with hard work and the pressure that comes with it, then they will have a difficult time in trying to succeed in life,” said Sim.

“We cannot afford to be lazy in this world and that is why I want all of you to be able to handle the hard work and pressure so that you can be more competitive, which is an important aspect for you as students.

“You must remember that the world is changing and you need more than just a university degree to be able to succeed in life.

“Care to be curious because that is where innovation comes around and it is important for us to move forward as a country,” he said.

Sim, who is also Batu Kawah State Assemblyman as well as president of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), added that it is important to have these attributes instilled within students from a young age.

“We want students to be exposed to these concepts from early on and this will allow you, with the right qualification and attitude, to be the best in the world and open up many more opportunities.

“There are no shortcuts in life for success and there are some things that money cannot buy; I want all of you to be in a position that allows you to be successful,” he said.

Speaking on the conference, the minister encouraged students to take a more active part in it so that they can get the most out of it.

The event was also attended by Unimas Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni) Professor Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman.

The two-day conference starting yesterday and ends today is organised by the final year nursing students of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Unimas.
