KUCHING: Nurturing one’s artistic talents could potentially lead to a career with rewarding returns, said Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.
According to her, in the past, artistic talent wasn’t seen to be as important as academic achievement.
She used the example of parents and schools that valued their children’s and students’ academic achievements, as it was seen as the only way to secure a bright future.
“However, things are changing and the future is brighter for our children because anything is possible now.
“I believe by allowing our children to take part in singing competitions, it will help to build up their confidence level.
“Going on stage to perform or present a speech to an audience is not an easy task and by taking part in such competitions, they can learn to develop their skills,” she said when officiating at the Red FM Red Christmas Kids Christmas Songs Showdown 2019 at Vivacity Megamall here last Friday.
Twenty contestants took part in the event.
Yong also encouraged parents and teachers to be aware of their children’s and students’ talents, as well as to provide them with the opportunity to develop it — following in the footsteps of local artistes who have achieved international recognition.
Also present during the event were Red FM chief (Chinese segment) Liew Jiew Chun and Vivacity Megamall senior A&P executive Regina Ho.
