KUALA LUMPUR: More than 500 of the best local and international triathletes will compete in the NX113 Desaru Triathlon championships at Lotus Desaru Beach Resort, Johor, on July 23.
Three categories will be contested, namely the ‘Sprint’ event which combines swimming 750 metres (m), cycling 20 kilometres (km) and running 5km, 113 Triathlon (swimming 2km-cycling 90km-running 21km) and ‘Super Sprint’ (swimming 300m-cycling 10km-running 2km).
However, of the three categories, Race Director Andy Foo said in a statement that only the ‘Sprint’ event will be used as a national championship.
He said, among the foreign triathletes who are going to boost the Desaru NX113 Triathlon are those from the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.
“This event (NX113 Desaru Triathlon) is one where athletes have the opportunity to earn points for the World Triathlon ranking,” he said.
In the same statement, Malaysia Triathlon president Tony Tan Piula said that he hoped more athletes, especially from the youth group, will take advantage of the opportunity to perform in the national championships to get the best exposure and showcase their respective abilities.
Tony said the goal he wants to achieve through the national championship is to encourage more young athletes to compete in identifying and bringing together a group of the best national athletes to be featured at the international level later. – BERNAMA
