KUCHING: A delegation of tertiary students from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, immersed themselves in Sarawak’s vibrant indigenous communities during their visit to the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) recently.
The students with Maori heritage embarked on a journey to deepen their understanding of SBC’s engagement with the state’s indigenous communities, igniting a new chapter in international collaboration.
This visit marks a significant milestone in the varsity’s commitment to foster global connections and opportunities for Maori communities through its flagship initiative, Te Hononga-a-Kiwa (THK).
“After their initial visit last year, the university returned with a new group of students to enhance the connection.
“Since 2018, the University of Waikato has delivered THK on behalf of the North Asia (NA), Southeast Asia (SEA), and Latin America (LatAm) Centres of Asia Pacific Excellence.
“The THK is an initiative that seeks to enhance Maori business presence and interactions in diverse international markets, fostering global connections and opportunities for Maori communities on an international scale,” SBC said in a Facebook post.
SBC added that the university has been at the forefront of delivering THK’s tailored business programmes, equipping Maori tertiary students and businesses with the skills and knowledge to thrive in diverse sectors.
From primary industry to cultural tourism, these programmes stress entrepreneurship, digital technology, and Indigenous development.
