MIRI: Suarah Petroleum Group (SPG) has reaffirmed its commitment to establish Sarawak Oil and Gas Innovation Centre (Sogic) here.
It will also provide continuous support and commitment towards assisting the state government in addressing and redressing oil and gas (O&G) issues related to Sarawak.
The group gave the reassurance during its fifth annual general meeting of the Techno-Commercial Forum, themed ‘Prospectivity of Onshore Sarawak O&G Resources’, held here recently. The event was also telecast live via Zoom to enable SPG members from outside Miri to participate.
Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), in a statement yesterday, said SPG was now actively partnering with the university and other O&G stakeholders to set up Sogic.
Sogic was one of seven resolutions adopted by SPG delegates at the inaugural Sarawak Oil & Gas Seminar and Exhibition 2019 (SOGSE 2019) held here last year; it was later presented to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The resolution called for the establishment of Sogic by SPG, Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd, DUBS Holdings Sdn Bhd and Curtin Malaysia to promote innovation initiatives that would underpin the future development of Sarawak’s O&G industry.
SOGSE 2019 also saw the exchange of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Serba Dinamik Holdings Berhad’s group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah, DUBS Holdings Sdn Bhd’s managing director Osaha Suhaili, SPG president Jamel Ibrahim and former pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive of Curtin Malaysia, Emeritus Professor Jim Mienczakowski.
Two petroleum engineering lecturers of Curtin Malaysia, Dr Ziad Bennour and Dr Mahmood Bataee, who had extensive work experience in the O&G industry internationally, were guest speakers at the recent forum.
Dr Ziad presented a paper on the geological attributes of Sarawak’s O&G prospects, highlighting the onshore hydrocarbon producing areas in the state, while Mahmood spoke about the challenges of onshore O&G exploration and production, particularly onshore Sarawak.
Other speakers were SPG president Abang Iskandar Abang Muas and principal geophysician with RPS Energy Limited/WH Petroleum Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Wan Helmi, who presented talks titled ‘SPG — Who We Are’ and ‘Maturing Prospectivity of Oil & Gas Resources’ respectively.
SPG was formed and launched in 2015. Its membership comprises Sarawakian former chief executive officers, engineers, lawyers, consultants, human capital/talent specialists, entrepreneurs, contractors and professional service providers involved in the O&G industry.
