KUCHING: The Olive Run 2024 returned with renewed energy today (Sept 21) after a hiatus since 2019.
Organising chairperson Mark Octavius expressed joy over the event’s success, which saw over 250 participants competing in three categories: 5 km (men and women open), 2 km (children under 12), and 2 km (ages 60 and above).
He noted that the run, themed ‘Blessed to be a Blessing,’ commemorated the BEM Olive Garden church’s 30th anniversary and provided an opportunity for fellowship.
“Praise the Lord that we were able to hold this Olive Run; it is such a joyous occasion to celebrate the church’s 30th anniversary. This year is special compared to previous Olive Runs because we are celebrating this milestone,” he said.
Mark added Olive Run, which doubles as a fundraising event, introduced a new blue T-shirt design alongside the colours from previous years, marking a fresh chapter for the occasion.
“This is a special occasion because the last time BEM Olive Garden organised a run was before the 2019 pandemic, so it feels wonderful to have the event back again,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, who was in attendance, announced a financial grant of RM5,000 for BEM Olive Garden.
He presented medals to the winners of the Olive Run 2024 at the Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) compound.
In his address, Yap called upon the Christian community to set a good example.
He pointed out that given Sarawak’s Christian majority population, it is important for the community to continue to serve as role models.
“Let us all join hands to ensure we keep this flock together and bring more people into the fold to share the Good News with others,” he said.
