KUCHING: Five friends who were travelling in a car from Pueh to Sematan will never feel the same again as one of them died while three were serious injured and one escaped with minor injuries.

Sarawak Head of Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the five were travelling in a car on the Telok Melano, Lundu/Sematan Road heading to Sematan from Pueh at 4am yesterday when the driver lost control of the car and crashed.

The impact of the crash caused one of the five in the car; David Dillon Anton aged 19 from Kpg Sungai Raya to die on the spot. He was seated at the back of the car. Three others were thrown out of the car. The 25-year-old driver however managed to crawl out of the car by himself. The four were aged between 16 and 25.

The four injured were taken to Lundu Hospital for treatment while the deceased was brought to the morgue for a post-mortem.

Firemen were also called to the scene to cut the mangled car to extricate David from the car.

Alexson said initial investigation revealed that the area was dark at the time of the accident but the stretch of road where the accident occurred is very straight.

He said the accident happened after the driver lost control of the car.

He added that the police are also investigating if speeding was the cause of the accident.

At the moment, Alexson said he could not reveal much as the car will be brought to Puspakom for further checks.

The car which is a mangled wreck is believed to have overturned a few times during the accident.

Police had taken the car from the accident scene and brought it to Puspakom for investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, 1987.
