SIBU: A 35-year-old man from Bintangor realised too late the folly of his act to steal a water jet after he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment and fined RM1,000 in default of one month’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today.

Fareez pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar.

He was charged with committing theft of a water jet at a house in Jalan Quarry at about 9.37pm on July 16.

The offence is punishable under Section 379 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term which may extend to seven years or fine or both, upon conviction.

According to the brief facts of the case, at about 7am on July 16, at a house in Jalan Quarry, the complainant, aged 33, realised that his water jet had gone missing.

Believing that the water jet worth RM1,000 was stolen, he lodged a police report for further action.

On July 19 at about 11.40am following a tip off, a police team led by Sergeant Abdul Razak Ibrahim arrested a man at a roadside of Jalan Teku on suspicion of being involved in the case.

Also seized from the suspect was a water jet believed to be stolen goods.

The complainant had identified the water jet seized from the accused that was reported missing based on the damaged mark on the rubber gasket and the writing of his name tag in Chinese.

Inspection of the closed circuit television (CCTV) footage at the scene also captured the act of the accused at 9.37pm on July 16.

The accused, who was not represented by legal counsel, opted to pay the fine.
