MIRI: A fire broke out at one of two teacher’s quarters of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Bungan, Mulu, early yesterday morning killing one primary school teacher and injuring two others (teachers).

The deceased has been identified as Catherine Janet Tiwi, 25, while the two teachers sustained burn injuries.

Catherine was a teacher at SK Penghulu Baya Mallang, and they were at SK Batu Bungan for a school camp, which was attended by students and teachers from three primary schools, namely SK Batu Bungan, SK Penghulu Baya Mallang and SK Long Panai.

The charred remains of the deceased were found later in one of the quarters which was totally destroyed by fire.

A total eight teachers occupied at the two quarters prior to the horrific incident.

Zone 6 Fire and Rescue Station chief, Supt Law Poh Kiong in a statement yesterday, disclosed that the fire started from the living room of one of the quarters.

From police’s preliminary investigation, Catherine managed to come out of safely but she returned to the quarters to save another two teachers who were trapped inside their room.

After saving the two, Catherine was unable to find her way out of the burning quarters.

The fire was discovered around 5.09am that morning (Wednesday), the statement added.

A team of Fire and Rescue from Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Mulu airport was immediately despatched to the scene at 5.40am, after being alerted on the incident.
