SARAWAK remains firm in pursuing a one-third representation in Parliament, stressing that the matter is the state’s right.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said that the Sarawak government has proposed to increase the parliamentary representation for Sarawak and Sabah to 35 per cent, as enshrined under the Inter-Governmental Committee Report 1962 (IGC), to uphold the principles of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“At the most recent Malaysia Agreement 1963 Action Council (MTPMA63), it was decided that the Federal Attorney General’s Chambers would undertake a comprehensive legal review of the interpretation of ‘safeguards’ as outlined in the IGC Report.
“Further discussions will be conducted with the Attorney General’s Chambers of Sabah and Sarawak to assess and formulate the necessary policy positions within the applicable legal frameworks.
“Rest assured that we will continue to pursue the implementation of this matter,” he said when delivering his winding-up speech for the International Trade, Industry, and Investment Ministry today (Nov 20).
Awang Tengah further said Sarawak is adamant with the proposal to reaffirm and uphold Sarawak’s rightful place and representation as stipulated in the IGC.
