KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) continues to work with other agencies to address online and electronic media fraud cases.
According to a news report by the State Public Information Unit (UKAS), its minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said such cases had increased following the outbreak of COVID-19, which had made online trading part of the new norm.
“From 2020 to Feb 17 this year, KDPNHEP has received a total of 24,011 complaints, of which RM21.7 million was related to such fraud,” he said in a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.
To combat manipulation by unethical traders, the ministry is working with the police, Registration Department, Bank Negara, Companies Commission of Malaysia, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission as well as telecommunications companies and online marketplace operators.
“KPDNHEP also involves the Multimedia Development Corporation, online marketplace operators as well as other industry players in connection with the enforcement of online transaction legislation in an integrated manner in line with the e-Commerce Strategic Roadmap,” he said.
In the meantime, Nanta hoped that the federal government would continue to provide allocations to further strengthen the skills of KPDNHEP enforcement officers to be on par with current technological development.
