KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Parliamentary Chief Whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said since the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) represents Sarawak it is important to have it debate the proposed amendment to Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution that was tabled in Parliament recently.
“From there we will be able to plan what our next move,” he told reporters after attending Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council meeting at its headquarters yesterday.
However, GPS must also discuss the issue with Sabah followed by a discussion between them and the federal government, he said.
He recalled that GPS had asked the federal government to form a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to look into the implementation of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA 1963), and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Legal Affairs Liew Vui Keong had also announced that he would set it up.
“The PSC would play a role in refining any proposed amendment to the constitution,” he said.
When asked when the committee would be set up, Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, hoped it would happen as soon as possible.
“Most probably during the Parliament sitting in June, but most importantly, any amendment must include the claimed rights that have been discussed in the Steering Committee. Certain elements of the MA63 and the Inter-Governmental Committee Report (IGC) must be the core of the amendments,” he stressed.
