SIBU: Only seven tombs at the Sungai Pasai cemetery here were confirmed desecrated last Saturday, revising the initial report that erroneously claimed 40 graves were affected.

“Following the first report made by a 55-year-old woman on Dec 2 at 1.15 pm, we have now received five police reports concerning this incident. Our investigations at the cemetery confirmed that seven graves, both old and new, were vandalised,” said Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, today (Dec 3).

The estimated damage is reported to be around RM13,500.

“We are actively working to identify and apprehend the responsible individual or individuals,” added Zulkipli.

The case is being investigated under Section 297 of the Penal Code, which deals with trespassing offenses in cemeteries.

Zulkipli urged the public to avoid speculation as the investigation is still in progress.

The police have requested anyone with information about the incident to contact the IPD Sibu at 084-364373 or investigating officer, Inspector Kong Zheng Shien, at 016-8095757.
