KUCHING: People have little choice but to brace for price increases at eateries following global uncertainties which have led to inflationary pressures and subsequent hikes in the prices of goods.

Local authorities are aware of the consequences of price increases on people but are not in any position to rein the problem in.

“It is a tough time for all, for the people and the government. We can only tighten our belts, spend on the basic necessities and on what are absolutely necessary. That’s life,” said Kota Samarahan Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

He said the rising price of food and drinks at eateries is very tough especially on low income groups such as B40 and M40.

“We ourselves feel it and it is not pleasant,” he giving, giving as example an urban family with a combined monthly income of RM3,000.

“After paying installments and bills, there is little and no savings for most of the families.

“Plus prices are now rising due the inflation rate across the world, the war in Ukraine, the sanctions by the US and we are also affected.

“We can only act by cutting expenses and imports and but we all know this is easier said than done,” he said.

According to Minos total subsidies of over RM 77 billion per year is already heavy on the federal government and that this is unlikely to increase.
