MIRI: The state government believes it can achieve the goal of attracting four million visitors to Sarawak this year.

“With the upgrading of infrastructures and facilities at many tourist attractions and completion of the Pan-Borneo Highway, surely tourists will explore Sarawak, including in Miri, seamlessly,” said Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

In highlighting this, he said, more aggressive measures must be taken in marketing Miri City at the international level to prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

He called for the focus to be on eco-tourism, prioritising unique and responsible experiences.

Abdul Karim said this at the launching of the fourth edition of Miri’s Bubuk Festival in Kuala Batu 1 fish market here.

His speech was read by his Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting.

He said to achieve these goals, all stakeholders, including government, local businesses, communities, and visitors, must actively collaborate.

“All parties should play their respective roles and not rely solely on the government’s efforts because it is the responsibility of all stakeholders,” he pointed out.

“Today’s Festival is a good example of cooperation between all parties in empowering tourism in Miri City and supporting the government’s call to focus on the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to make Sarawak the most advanced state based on economic prosperity, social inclusion and resource sustainability, by 2030,” Abdul Karim said.

The one-day Pesta Bubuk Miri  is an annual event held here to celebrate the onset of the bubuk (krill) season.

Bubuk (shrimp) is abundant in the waters off Miri during the months of February and March.

The festival ]organised by the Miri City Council (MCC) features a variety of activities, including demonstrations of traditional bubuk catching methods; cooking demonstrations of bubuk-based dishes; sales of bubuk-based products, such as belacan (shrimp paste), cencalok (fermented shrimp) and keropok (shrimp crackers).
