Op Dadu nets 20 for gambling activities

KUCHING: Five women were among 20 individuals arrested for alleged involvement in illegal gambling activities in a seven-day operation codenamed ‘Op Dadu’.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement, said the operation by Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Kuching district police headquarters (IPD), was held from Jan 30 to Feb 5.

He added that a total of 17 raids were carried out around locations under the administrative of Gita police station.

“The operation resulted in 20 individuals comprising 12 locals and eight foreigners, arrested for running illegal gambling activities.

“Also seized in the operation are cash amounting to RM2,837, 18 phones as well as some gambling apparatus such as pieces of paper written with IDs and passwords and mobile printer,” he said.

The local police chief said they opened 17 investigation papers under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 (online gambling) and under Section 4a(a) of the same Act (unlicensed public lottery gambling).

Both sections provide for fines up to RM200,000 and a jail sentence for a term up to five years, upon conviction.

The public are urged to channel information related to gambling activities in their areas at the nearest police station.
