KUCHING: World-class technology from the Netherlands will be implemented in Opar Rural Growth Centre (RGC) in the future to produce more high quality and profitable crops.
Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang said the innovative circular economy approach also has the potential to be a tourist attraction and showcase the area’s prospects for sustainable food production.
“This project will benefit the local community around Opar RGC by providing a source of sustainable income and creating job opportunities in related industries,” he said during the presentation of Opar RGC as Sarawak metropolitan food cluster held here, recently.
Billy, when met by reporters, said the eco-tourism industry is also emphasized and will become an increasingly developed sector in line with the increase in tourists interested in the agricultural sector.
He added that Opar RGC is a joint venture between the private sector and the Sarawak government in line with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 which includes the element of environmental sustainability.
“This project will also ensure that raw material resources are used efficiently and reduce solid waste.
“The success of this project will be measured not only from its economic impact but also from its ability to promote social and environmental sustainability in Opar.
“The implementation of this project is an important step towards creating a sustainable future for the people in Opar,” he said.
The presentation carried out by the Sarawak Metropolitan Food Cluster Consortium (SMFC) and organised by Agro Macthigen was held to get feedback from the village heads on the proposed project.
The programme involved several village heads from Opar representing Kampung Stom Muda, Kampung Stungkor Baru, Kampung Stungkor Lama, Kampung Raso 2, Kampung Raso 1, Kampung Bokah and Kampung Simpang Bokah.
Also present were special administrative officer of the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik and political secretary to the Premier Niponi Undek.
