KUCHING: Open-mindedness, that is, receptiveness to new ideas, is needed before component parties can sit down to discuss the formation of a single multiracial party.
Tupong State Assemblyman, Fazzrudin Haji Abdul Rahman said without open-mindedness, forming a multiracial party would be a big problem.
He was commenting on the proposal by Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing to turn Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) into a single multiracial party.
“Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth welcomes any suggestions, especially from Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing,” Fazzrudin told reporters at his Hari Raya open house at Dewan Pustaka dan Bahasa here yesterday.
He pointed out that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) which consisted of members from different backgrounds had been able to “solve problems together like a family.”
“It is hoped other component parties will share the same practice,” added Fazzrudin.
“What is important now is for GPS to focus on developing the state for the benefit of its people.”
Meanwhile, a member of the public, Emylia Khaleda, 25, said that there should not be any problems for GPS to be a multiracial party.
“We have been living harmoniously regardless of race and religion, and as far as politics is concerned, I am sure the politicians can work together under one party. There should not be a problem,” she added.
