KUCHING: A total of 288 summonses have been issued to owners of vehicle with modified exhaust pipes during operations dubbed ‘Ops Khas Kesalahan Bunyi (Ekzos)’ from Mar 1 to 12.
Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said of the figure, 188 of the errant vehicles are motorcycles, 96 cars and four other vehicles.
“As of Friday, we carried out a total of 171 operations throughout the state and inspected 6,823 vehicles comprising 2,451 motorcycles, 2,411 cars and 1,961 other vehicles.
“We have issued 288 summonses to vehicle owners for their modified exhaust systems which cause noise pollution.
“Apart from that, the Department of Environment (DoE) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) involved in the integrated operation, have also issued compound notices for the offences,” he said.
Alexson added that they also confiscated 43 motorcycles and a car to facilitate investigations under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Besides that, police also issued 2,645 summonses for various traffic offences throughout the 12-day period.
Among the offences include not wearing seat belts; modified vehicle structure; dangerous load; no driving licence; failure to show driving licence; registration number not in accordance with specifications; ‘fancy’ registration number; no brake lights; not wearing helmet; using telecommunication devices; no side mirrors; no display of ‘P’ sign; and expired motor vehicle licences.
