Ops Jala sees 58 illegal immigrants rounded up so far

KUCHING: Fifty-eight illegal immigrants have been detained in Ops Jala operations so far.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the immigrants, detained under Section 15(1) of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act 1988 (Act 342), were now placed in quarantine centres.

So far, 22 construction sites and 14 coffee shops around Kuching, have been inspected, bringing the total number of premises inspected to 36.

Enforcement agencies involved in the operations checked 601 locals, and 589 foreigners from Indonesia, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, China and Myanmar.

Meanwhile under Ops Sapu, Uggah said the Immigration Department carried out an operations in Sibu on Monday (Jan 25).

As a result of the operations, 161 immigrants were examined and of the figure, 72 were arrested.

They were arrested for offences such as overstaying, and not having any valid pass while in Sarawak.
