LIMBANG: Over 3,000 cartons of various duty-not-paid cigarettes were seized in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’ here last Friday (Apr 8).

Acting on information, a team from the General Operations Force (GOF) 12th Battalion raided a house in the town at 7am.

During the raid, they also arrested a local man who claimed to be the owner of the house.

A spokesman said the team found that the house was used to store various brands of cigarettes for which custom duties were not paid and to be sold in the local markets.

The team found a total of 3,386 cartons of various duty-not-paid cigarettes in boxes stacked in the house.

The contraband, valued at a whopping RM506,912, were seized as evidence.

The house owner was handed over to Limbang police together with the contraband goods for further action.

The case will be be investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
