SIBU: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) seized contraband cigarettes and alcoholic beverages worth more than RM112,000 last Saturday (July 17).
In the operations codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’, the 10th Battalion GOF team carried out a raid on a double-storey premises in the city.
Brigade commander SAC Saini Bongkek said the premises is believed to be used as a storage for uncustomed cigarettes and liquors.
After conducting surveillance for about four hours, the team approached the premises and detained a man claiming to be its keeper.
“Further inspections led to the discovery of 607 cartons of various brands of cigarettes and 1,019 litres of branded alcohol beverages inside the premises.
“The contraband goods valued at over RM112,000 were seized as evidence,” he said.
He said the suspect failed to produce valid documents relating to ownership of the duty-not-paid contraband items.
Saini added that the man and seizure items were handed to Sibu police for further action.
The case is still being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
