KUCHING: In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2018, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) launched a  two-weeks long Hari Raya Aidilfitri  Enforcement Operation, from 8 June to 24 June 2018.

Member of Parliament for Stampin, Chong Chieng Jen said that the aim of the ops is to ensure the road journey is safer especially during the festive season.

“There are certain measures taken and implemented such as the prohibition of heavy vehicles to travel on the roads during festive season especially on 13 to 14 June 2018, just before the festive celebration and on 23 to 24 June 2018, after the main festive dates,” he said during a press conference after the launching of the ops at Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal, yesterday.

As for the measures, some of the lorry operators feel that they need to be reviewed, he said.

“The policy has been implemented and this is the first time concern has been raised, so we will review it for next year.

“But for this year, we hope the lorry association members will bear with us as this is a good intention,  to make our road safer,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, State JPJ director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah said that the department has done the technical inspection for the express buses traveling during the festive season from 1 June to 7 June 2018.

“This is to ensure the buses are in safe and good condition to travel on the road,” he added.

He said a total of 109 officers are involved in the operation including enforcement officers from the motorcycle unit.

“ Last year’s statistics on accidents involving buses showed only one case that resulted in death and another was a minor accident,” he pointed out.

Therefore this year JPJ targets zero accident involving buses and hope that every journey by bus will arrive safely at its destination, he said.

The road ops also focus on seven main offences namely not obeying the traffic lights, overtaking on double- lines, using mobile phones, driving in emergency lane, not wearing seat belt, driving in the right lanes continuously and cutting  queue line.
