KUCHING: A total of 457 accident cases were recorded in Sarawak during the eight-day Ops Selamat 20 held from Apr 20 to 27 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said that the figure showed a slight increase of four cases compared to last year’s Ops Selamat 18. The rise was attributed to factors such as driver negligence, poorly maintained vehicles, and an increase in vehicles on the road.
According to Azman, the addition of 1,169,722 million vehicles recorded on the roads in the state also contributed to the number of road accidents. The number of vehicles on the roads saw an increase of 30,366 compared to 1,139,356 million vehicles last year in the same festive season.
The police recorded nine fatal accidents during Ops Selamat 20, compared to eight cases last year. However, the number of deaths remained the same as last year’s Ops Selamat 18 with nine deaths each.
