MIRI: Police here will kick start its Ops Selamat in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration from Feb 8 until 13, focusing on three routes, namely the Jalan Bakam, Jalan Pan Borneo Highway and Miri By-pass Road.

According to Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, heavy vehicles or goods-carrying vehicles are not allowed to use the roads during the six-day operation,

“Strict action will be taken against any company or individual who does not comply with the ban,” he said.

Alexson was met on Wednesday at the launching of a road safety campaign in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration at Morsjaya here.

More than 100 police personnel here are to be involved in the Ops Selamat this year.

On another note, a total of 51 road accidents were recorded for the period of January this year, compared to 57 in 2022 of the same month.

“Among top contributors for these accidents were reckless driving (85 per cent), others were rear-end collision(28 per cent ), speeding (24 per cent), side-impact collision (19 per cent), and head-on-collision (9 per cent),” he told the local media.
