KUCHING: Sarawak police will conduct a statewide ‘Ops Selamat’ from Jan 18 to Jan 27 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the 10-day operation will involve a total of 525 traffic policemen and police officers.

“The Ops Selamat will be held at 56 locations statewide to ensure all road users abide by the traffic laws,” he said.

It is also aimed at reducing the accident rate, especially during the festive season.

He said the force would station traffic policemen at locations prone to congestion and accidents.

He was speaking at a press conference after attending the Sarawak Contingent Police monthly assembly at the contingent Headquarters here today.

Azman said police have issued a total of 204,921 traffic summonses in 2022, a decrease of 1,497 compared to 2021 where 206,418 vehicles were issued summonses.

Last year, the police issued traffic summonses to 66,466 motorists for driving above the speed limit.

He advised all road users to abide by traffic rules to reduce the number of road accidents especially during the festive season.
