KUCHING: It seems that the creative industry is booming and the future is bright for young aspiring filmmakers.

For a start, a TVS original, ‘The Eyes of Sarawak Painters’, documents the lives of past and present artists showcasing their unique creativity and passion for art.

A short 40-minute film directed by Nova Goh, it is made with the hope that young artists will continue to follow their dreams and pursue filmmaking.

Nova, born and raised in Kuching, graduated from the University of Arts in Taiwan and first started making short films in 1998.

With 24 years of experience, he opines that there is an improving growth in the filmmaking industry in Kuching.

His works have been featured internationally such as the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival.

“Young filmmakers can now start filming documentaries and short films. The ecosystem of the film industry is already there”

“Film industry is improving now, and because there’s Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), where the lecturers there keep on doing screening,” he said.

Nova also believes that the generation today has what it takes to carry forward the film industry in Kuching and thinks that young artists have the potential to aim for future film festivals.

He also credits Hoan, who inspired him to start this project.

Hoan also has a gallery in La Promenade, named as ‘Hoan Gallery’ to feature artists from the past and present and tell an artistic but also historical perspective of the art scene across Sarawak.

The documentary produced by TVS will feature artists such as the late Raphael Scott Ahbeng, Stephanie Eng, Lee Hock Kia, Leaonard Siaw and Nia Latif.
