Orphans, asnaf treated to Gawai-Raya shopping

KUCHING: The Samariang branch of Sarawak United National Youths Organisation (Saberkas) today treated 60 orphans and asnaf (the needy) to some shopping for their Gawai Dayak and Aidilfitri needs.

The activity took place through ‘Cahaya Gawai Aidilfitri’ programme held here at Boulevard Shopping Mall.

Gracing the programme were Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister; Saberkas Samariang branch chairman and Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali accompanied by Petra Jaya Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The recipients aged between six and 15 each received an allocation of RM120 to buy new clothes.

Around 35 volunteers of the Saberkas Samariang branch took part in the programme to assist the children in shopping through planned activities.

According to Saberkas Samariang deputy chairman Sulhie Salleh, the programme was first held last year.

“This is the second time we are holding this programme. It is part of our responsibility to help the less fortunate.

“We hope that this aid can bring delight and ease the burden of their families in preparing the needs for the upcoming Gawai Dayak and Aidilfitri celebrations,” he said.

He added that such programme showed that Saberkas’ establishment was not only for entertainment but also to encourage the youths to play their role in approaching society as a whole, especially those in need through beneficial activities.
