Outcome of forum will address city’s viability

KUCHING: Kuching Call for Action has been documented and will be the basis for the city to enhance its resilience to climate change impact.

It was the outcome from the recent Malaysia Urban Forum (MUF2023) where Mayor of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Hilmy Othman said that the outcome will also address equitable economic development, social progress and environmental sustainability, ensuring the long term viability and enhancing the well-being of the city and its people.

“For instance, DBKU has taken a step forward with regards to fulfilling Child Rights with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with UNICEF on Child Friendly Cities Initiative.

“It is our commitment that the city development starts with every child,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the closing ceremony of MUF2023 at Hikmah Exchange here on Wednesday.

In the meantime, he said that the various enablers, especially strong institutions and governance to enable the transformative change necessary for achieving global sustainability goals, definitely needs to be affirmed.

On another note, president of Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) Dr Jawing Chunggat reaffirmed SDGA’s commitment through urban planning and built environment that is to catalyse transformative actions for sustainability and adopting a health perspective, and multi-scalar processes that are the key elements in driving sustainable and resilient urban development.

“Our other commitment includes sustainable consumption and production which will reduce the negative impacts of consumption and production on the environment while promoting economic and social development.

“We pledge to cooperate in good faith and in the spirit of partnership to work towards the fulfilment of the principles embodied in the call for actions,” he added.

Present during the ceremony were Utility and Telecommunication Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman and other distinguished guests.
