Outstanding Curtin Malaysia students receive awards

MIRI: Four exceptional students were recently honoured with the Curtin Malaysia Student Learning Awards 2024.

Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) presented these awards to acknowledge students who exhibited exceptional commitment to enhancing their academic performance and actively participating in their learning journey.

The four recipients – Elly Maszlien Aping pursuing a Diploma of Commerce, Yong Xing Xuan studying for a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering, Aimie Peace Siganul pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering, and Ling Kian Wu studying a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance – embody the resilience and hard work that these prestigious awards aim to recognize.

Guided by dedicated academic staff, these students elevated their academic achievements, transitioning from Conditional academic status to Good Standing, a testament to their determination and the steadfast support of their lecturers.

Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Vincent Lee, in congratulating the awardees, commended their dedication to personal growth.

“These students did not merely engage with their coursework; they embraced it, showcasing dedication, resilience, and a drive to excel. Their accomplishments serve as a motivating reminder of the strength of perseverance,” he expressed.

Professor Tang Fu Ee, Dean of Learning and Teaching, emphasized the importance of awards as a source of motivation for students and academic staff.

“When students witness their hard work being recognized, it propels them to strive even further. These awards not only applaud the students’ progress but also acknowledge the tireless efforts of their mentors.”

Dr Tanusree Chakravarty Mukherjee, mentor to awardee Ling Kian Wu, highlighted the transformative impact of the awards on student engagement.

“I have witnessed firsthand how receiving this award has empowered Kian Wu to engage in class discussions actively. It is a remarkable initiative that significantly influences students’ motivation and self-assurance.”

Celebrating these student-mentor relationships was evident as each award recipient reflected on their journey.

For Aimie Peace Siganul, the award symbolized the culmination of unwavering dedication. “This award validates the countless hours of hard work. It serves as a reminder that persistence truly pays off, and I deeply appreciate my lecturer’s support,” she remarked. Dr Tay Ai Chen, Aimie’s mentor, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the significance of a nurturing academic environment.

“The progress Aimie has achieved is remarkable. This award not only underscores her commitment but also acknowledges the value of effective mentorship. It is a proud moment for both of us,” Dr. Tay shared.

For the lecturers, the awards signify their success as educators, fostering environments that promote student growth.

Dr. Angnes Tiong, who mentored awardee Yong Xing Xuan, expressed pride in her student’s accomplishments.

“Witnessing Yong regain his academic standing is incredibly fulfilling. These awards reinforce the importance of continuous support and remind us, as educators, of our impact on our students’ journeys.”

The Curtin Malaysia Student Learning Awards continue to highlight the dynamic relationship between students and educators, cultivating an environment where both parties strive for excellence.
