KUCHING: A total of 138 boats have been prepared to face the possibility of floods in 28 villages in Demak Laut constituency.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Assistant Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, who is also Demak Laut assemblyman, officiated at the symbolic handing over of the boats.
Sixty-eight existing boats belonging to fishermen are to be used for Tabuan Melayu Zone while the other 70 boats belonging to the tourist boat association will be used for Bako Zone, if required.
This is an initiative of the constituency’s Service Centre together with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Demak Laut 4×4 Club to assist the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and government agencies in the event of a major flood in the area.
