KUCHING: Thick haze did not deter some 1,000 people from taking part in various activities at the ‘Stop the Stigma Run’ 2019 held at the compound of the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building here yesterday.
Over 1,500 had registered to take part in the 4km and 12km runs, which had to be called off due to worsening haze which saw the Air Pollutant Index (API) in Kuching reaching unhealthy levels.
Participants, both young and old, arrived as early as 6am and free face masks were given to them on the spot.
The event was organised by the psychiatric department of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) to create awareness of mental health and to break the stigma towards people suffering from mental health problems.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad officiated at the event.
Among those present were Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim, SGH director Dr Chin Zin Hing, SGH head of psychiatry and mental health Dr Selvasingam Ratnasingam and Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.
Dr Dzulkefly reminded members of the public to avoid outdoor activities in view of the worsening haze situation.
“We need to take care of our health and to take preventive measures during the haze,” he said.
He also urged the public to drink more fluid to ensure the body remain hydrated.
“For individuals with chronic illnesses such as lung diseases or asthma, self-care should be taken more seriously,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, among the side activities that were held were aerobics, stage performances, free physical and mental health screenings, free breakfast, sand art colouring and lucky draws.
