Over 3,000 attendees expected at Para SUKMA opening ceremony

KUCHING: Over 3,000 attendees including athletes from 15 contingents are expected at the opening ceremony of the Para (SUKMA) Malaysia Games tomorrow (Sept 22).

Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the opening ceremony will showcase authenticity and uniqueness, featuring various ethnic groups united in harmony to deliver an outstanding performance.

She said the performance will involve Sarawakians of all ages, including both children and adults.

“We strive to be as inclusive as possible, for instance, by involving people with disabilities (PWD) and showcasing the talents of Sarawakian children who have made a name for themselves internationally.

“We hope that, similar to the support received during previous SUKMA events, the public will extend the same level of support to our para-athletes, as well as for the opening and closing ceremonies,” she told reporters during her visit to Stadium Perpaduan last night (Sept 20).

Fatimah, who attended the rehearsal said that the performance and presentation of culture provide an opportunity for Sarawakians to demonstrate their values, particularly in supporting people with disabilities.

“I believe that with this support, our athletes will feel inspired and motivated to give their best,” she said.

Accompanying Fatimah at the rehearsal were her deputies Datuk Rosey Yunus, and Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam.

Also present were Para SUKMA chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Hii Chang Kee and also the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Datuk Felicia Tan Ya Hua.

The opening ceremony which is expected to be a grand occasion, will be officiated by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and will be attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, as well as Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
