MIRI: Heavy downpour and flash floods in the northern region of Sarawak have resulted in 401 flood victims to seek shelter at six temporary evacuation centres.
Sarawak disaster management agencies such as the Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Fire and Rescue Services Department reported that as of 4pm today, there were 341 flood evacuees in Lawas and 60 in Limbang.
The first evacuation centre in Lawas is located at Trusan Community Hall providing shelter to 100 evacuees from 19 families in seven villages – Kampung Seberang, Kampung Perumahan Gelapas, Kampung Senduyun, Kampung Masjid Lama, Kampung Tengah, Kampung Pengeran Kerta and Kampung Gelapas.
Another 81 victims comprising 21 families from eight villages – Kampung Lubok Abai, Kampung Long Tukon, Kampung Balai, Kampung Gelapas, Kampung Senduyun, Kampung Lubuk Betong, Kampung Masjid and Kampung Tengah, are being placed at the SJK Chung Hwa Trusan evacuation centre.
Another evacuation centre at SK Kampung Lintang, is currently sheltering 147 evacuees from 37 flood affected families at the village. The fourth evacuation centre in Lawas, is located at SK Sundar. It currently houses 13 flood victims from two families in Kampung Aru Sundar.
In Limbang, the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) has turned Medamit community hall into a temporary evacuation centre, providing shelter for 32 flood victims from 10 families of Rumah Brain Seruji, Rumah Ensungai, Rumah Satu Kuala Medalam, Rumah Entabang Lubok Pasu, Rumah Kelati and Rumah Sepangah.
Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Services Department reported that 28 flood victims from seven families in Kampung Ukong, have been evacuated to the village’s multipurpose hall after it was officially turned into an evacuation centre by Limbang DDMC.
In addition, the department also revealed that several areas in Miri were still experiencing rising flood waters.
Among the affected areas were Long Beruang, Kampung Long Miri, Long Laput, Uma Bawang Baram, Kampung Long Lama, Long Atip, Long Puak, Long Pilah, Long Lama town, SK Long Luteng, Mulu town and SK Penghulu Baya Mallang.
However there has been no evacuation of flood victims from these areas to date.
